The odd thing that I found recently is as follows. Francis Kain was married to Ruth Cook, and they had five known children, four of whom survived to adulthood - their names were Thomas, Joseph, Francis, Charlotte and Charles, born between about 1764 and 1778. Ruth died in 1792 at Shoreditch aged 56.

I know it is not conclusive proof but my cousin owns a miniature painting, with Francis Kain's date of death and age written on the back, this having been passed down through the family. It is on this basis that I believe Henry Kain, my great x 3 grandfather, is the son of Francis Kain. But who was his mother?

(Henry's wife, Maria Ann Cracklow, has a clearly defined lineage and was not the daughter of Mary Wagstaffe.)

In 1796, Francis Kain and Ursula Newton (nee Wagstaffe) were witnesses at the marriage of Francis Kain jnr and Mary Allen. In 1809, Francis Kain and Ursula marry. She was born in Derby in 1755 and so was too old to have had two sons, Henry and Richard, as a result of this marriage, but in her will she refers to her sons, Henry and Richard Kain. It is perfectly possible that they were her sons from her earlier marriage to John Newton and they chose to adopt their step father's name, pehaps for some reason relating to inheritance.

But, on the other hand, an Ursula Wagstaff was baptised at Christ Church, Newgate in 1793, parents Francis and Ursula (Pallot's Baptisms). An Ursula Kain, infant, was buried 19 May 1793 at St Mary's Hendon. Richard Wagstaffe was baptised in Christ Church in 1791 with the same parents. This date ties in with the age of Richard Kain at death in 1827 of 35. I have yet to find a birth for Henry. I am wondering if Francis and Ursula were in a relationship at least from the 1790s, unable to marry because John Newton was still alive.
