Uncle Hubert had flat feet and was not accepted for the Army, but worked on the land. Agricultural Company Essex Regt.
Yvonne Walsh writes (April 2001):
Your father used to visit my father at Torquay. He retired there early in the 2nd World War - Bob and I had been evacuated there at the beginning of the War, married there and I lived there until Bob came out of the Army.
I am sure Horace would have been to Lords with my father - his life revolved round cricket in the summer months, he was a member of the MCC, played for them occasionally, and also sometimes for the Wanderers and I Zingari - but mainly he was a Club cricketer - for the Ibis, the Prudential Cricket Club - he was an excellent bat, and in fact has gone down in club annals as one of the best players they've had. When he died, my mother, sister and I donated a trophy to the Club, which is presented annually by Bob in his memory.
My father was a very gregarious and kind man - though given to moods on occasion - he got on well with all the sports fraternity. I didn't know he had helped your family after the War (I) but it does not surprise me.
