''Sidney Cath, Roy's father, contracted illness serving in Salonica during WW1. They lived in Godalming next door to Auntie Maggie's so beloved parents (who died within a few months of each other).
Sid had an aged motor bike and drove to Wittering and was able to buy land right on the sea front. I don't know who started the idea of railway coaches for bungalows. He put up one of the first five - to be sure his children would always have somewhere to play? Probably he knew he was dying - only in his 30's, much beloved and so needed.
"Nonsuch" was built about 1920. I don't think government in those days allocated anything to anybody - except licence to beg? They were everywhere, maimed men perhaps with hurdy gurdies, or selling matches or newspapers. The disgrace of it - unbelievable.
The so beloved Nonsuch caught fire one night when empty in 1963. It was almost certainly arson, which was a favourite passtime in those years. Roy was the owner, and got insurance with which we bought Roquebrune.
Auntie Maggie had died in hospital. Visiting her one day I said I had been at Nonsuch clearing up etc. and she said "But Irène, it is all burnt down!" and was quite confused when I said No indeed! Why did she have to pre-see it?
There is a little modern bungalow on the site now'' Irene Cath
