      It looks like his mother ''abandoned'' him before or about the time of her re-marriage in 1865. He was in the Refuge for Homeless and Destitute Boys at Great Queen Street, Lincoln's Inn Fields, which had opened there in about 1855. The children were trained in trades and were often sent to the colonies to work.
