      From WO records held at Kew:

      29 5 1884 - Enlisted as a private No. 678 with the Royal Lancaster Regt. in London, saying he was 18 y.o. and a shoemaker - Short Service Attestation papers say he was 18 and 1 month [he was actually 16 1/2], appeared over 19 physically, weight 121 lbs, height 5' 5 1/4", fresh complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, Church of England, scar left leg and little toes overlap. MO also noted smallpox scars on his face and 4 vaccination marks on his right arm. Period of enlistment 745 days. Next of kin - Brother George Cath of 172 Albion Road, Old Kent Road.

      6 10 1884 - Deserted: Record of the Court of Enquiry assembled at Aldershot on the 29th day of October 1884, for the purpose of investigating and recording the circumstances connected with the absence without leave, from his duty, and deficiency in the Arms, Ammunition, Equipments, Instruments, Regimental Necessaries, or Clothing, if any, of No. 678 Pte William Cath I/R Lancaster Regt.

      DECLARATION
      The Court declare, that No 678 Pte Wm Cath of I/R Lancs Regt has been illegally absent since the 6th October 1884 and that he is still so absent and further that he is.....nt of the following articles of his kit he hav.....een in possession of them on 3rd Oct. 84 viz [+ list of articles and their prices]

      It seems he was never caught and went to Australia, where he married Louisa Stannard in 1902 and became step-father to 3 children, but their names only appear on Wm's discharge papers in 1919 [WWI], all aged "over 16", but no records for them have been found in UK or W. Aus to date. He returned to UK in 1902 and was working as a miner at the start of WW1.

Wife Louisa Cath, s/a. Medical Inspection Report gives his apparent age as 34 [or 38] years [ he was actually 46], height 5' 6", weight 140 lbs, good vision , good physical development. Posted on duty at Abergaveny in category A1.
      21 7 1917 - Transferred to 14th South Lancs Regt. - Reg No 266272, rank Pte. His wife Louisa now at 134 Lavender Rd., York Rd, Battersea S W 2
      26 9 1918 - before Medical Board: "He states he had gradually felt himself unable to carry on his duties, he has been employed for the most part as an officers servant. He is a man of middle age [50 last birthday] who has obviously done a lot of hard work but has no evidence of organic disease. Release for mining recommended." Age now given, correctly, as 50.
      2 10 1918 - Transfer Approved to Class WT of the Reserve.
      10 10 1918 - Discharged and transferred to Ebbw Vale Steel Coal & Iron Coy, Ebbw Vale.
